fill in the blank friday

A short and sweet Fill in the Blank Friday from Lauren @ the little things we do. Link up and play along! I've got no pictures to share but some fun links...

1.   My favorite color is green. Earthy, fresh, and looks like it smells good. I remember touring George Washington's home and the guide noting that he painted his dining room green to "stimulate the appetite". It was a gorgeous room.

2.  My travel destination of choice is the Italian coast...or the Caribbean.

3.  My favorite  food is pizza. Unimaginative but it always, always hits the spot.

4.  My happy place is the Oregon Coast. It doesn't get much more peaceful.

5.  My favorite saying is  "WINNING!!!!" Just kidding. I wish I could work this phrase into my vocabulary, though.

6.  My dirty little secret is a dirty little secret! Also kidding. Do I have one??

7.  Something friends might say about me is that I am the queen of the "Running Man".

roman holiday

My aunt and cousin came for a visit on their way up to Seattle yesterday and brought me a goodie basket to more fully enjoy my new "housebound" status. In the basket was the movie, Roman Holiday.

We were in Rome late last year and l.o.v.e.d it. My mom is going later this fall with her three sisters, and she's never been. I can't wait for her to experience the hustle and bustle of that crazy city.

We tucked the sisters in and relaxed on the couch to watch the lovely (and tiny-waisted!) Audrey. In this movie she debuted the short cut she's so famous for...and while watching I had to talk myself out of getting a "mom cut" and thinking it would end up as cute as hers. It never, ever would.

Makes me miss Rome! Wonder when we'll be back...

settling in.

Our family is finally settling in at home!

Ruthie and Afton were discharged from the NICU on Sunday at noon. We strapped their teeny bodies in their car seats and didn't look back.

Below was right before their feeding tubes were removed and they went on an ad-lib eating schedule. Ruthie's yawns take up her whole face!

At our 2-day checkup yesterday, Ruthie had already gained half a pound (4.15) and Afton 3 ounces (5.3)! I think it's because they're so happy to be home, of course.

So happy to be able to cuddle and feed our babies whenever we want.

Snug as bugs

The girls are finally sharing a crib here in the NICU, and it is the cutest thing ever. It absolutely melts my heart to see them together! The nurse said last night they were holding hands for a little bit. That's why I hate to leave them here - I miss those little moments.

And then I feel sad; they are still supposed to be warm and safe inside the womb, not having to take on all the challenges of this hard outside world.

But then I look around at all the other NICU families and the teeniest babes here with double or triple the challenges of my girls; some moms can't hold or cuddle their child for more than a few minutes because it takes too much of the baby's energy, and some are so sick that one whole side of the unit gets shut down for bedside surgery. Yesterday, I took a "car seat safety" class for preemies and one mom in the class has been here with her babes for four months. She had triplets at 25 weeks, one passed away, and the surviving twins are finally going home next week on oxygen.

Thinking about these things, I can only feel thankful that waking up to eat enough is the only thing keeping Ruthie and Afton here, and they get better every day. Another nurse told me, "one day, they just wake up, eat everything, and cry a lot more. Then we know that it is time for them to go home."

So, just waiting, but waiting with a thankful heart.

fill in the blank friday

IMG_5202

A fill in the blank Friday courtesy of new mama-to-be (yay!)

1.   My plans this summer include two little girls named Ruthie and Afton. They will be here any minute, and I'm so excited to spend my summer getting to know them and them getting to know us. It's a strange feeling to be starting a family...things will never be the same!

2.  The best summer I ever had was high school summers. They were full of lakes, mountains, rivers, friends, camps, ice cream, BBQ's, family trips to the coast, and always, always a major tan. I miss those days. I want my girls to experience the glory of summer in its fullness...the move to a city and the combination of school and work for the past few years, and then the pregnancy this summer, has seriously dampened our fun. But it's definitely a priority for us, and can't wait to get back out there next summer!

3.  Summer is backyards, bike rides, open windows, hot pavement on bare feet, sand between my toes, the smell of the sun baking rocks and pine needles, glassy lake water ready for skiis, campfire, and stars.

4.  My favorite summer food is  fresh fruit and all the ways of preparing it! A huge peach with sticky juice, warm blackberries right off the bush, and though I've never been a fan of watermelon, I'm starting to really enjoy it...as long as it's a good one.

5.  The best way to quench a summer thirst is with  a light summery cocktail. All the morning tv shows have been showing segments on the best summer cocktails, and they have so many good ideas! And for actually replenishing dehydration, coconut juice all the way.

6.  My summer uniform consists of shorts and a blouse with flats or a summery dress. Next summer I am going to seriously need to update my wardrobe, though. I've been running on fumes for a loooong time and am running out of excuses!

7.  The best thing about summer is also what is best about life: family and friends. I think seasons have effects on relationships, and summer lends a carefree air that is so refreshing.

foreign flicks

I've become quite good friends with Netflix lately and spent many an afternoon browsing the foreign flicks section. So far, I've watched some great and not-so-great movies. Here are few of my favvies:

(Italy)

Bread&tulips

(France)

Priceless2_large.preview

(GB)

OK, I know Brit films dont really count. But this is a good one.

51hqS9bGCsL._SX500_

In the same vein as Gosford Park, but a wonderful 7-episode series from BBC.

70155164

(Australia)

Aussies have a quirky sense of humor (Muriel's Wedding, anyone?) but I think they're hilarious.

Strictly-Ballroom-On-DVD-397x525

(France, although no dialogue)

Have you seen this? It's seriously cute and very interesting!

Even Andy liked it!

Babies
I'll keep updating my foreign flick list for your enjoyment!

Independence Day!

"You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism."

Today was my "Independence Day" too...I'm officially released from the hospital and home in my lovely house on my lovely couch looking out my lovely window! Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. I'm still on "bed rest" here at home, but in much better spirits. I also saw my girls' room for the first time, which I can't wait to share with you.

Happy Independence Day everyone!
